Butterbean believes in supporting our community, taking care of our environment, and making healthy choices in our everyday lives. One of the ways this philosophy manifests itself is in the ingredients used in making our Butterbean skin care products.

Coconut oil.  Renowned for its nourishing effects on the skin. The antioxidant properties prevent burning, premature aging and oxidative damage. Coconut oil has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-protozoa properties. It also has naturally occurring sun protection.

Zinc Oxide. A micronized powder from the earth. Zinc is used in sunscreens to provide a physical barrier between the suns rays and your skin. We use powdered zinc oxide and add it to the oils over a very low heat. The zinc oxide used at Butterbean is non-nano meaning the particles are large enough not to get into the blood stream (read more here).

Shea butter. Extracted from the nut of the Karate Tree or, “The Tree of Life". This Shea butter is raw and unrefined. It is produced in the traditional way in Uganda by village women. The women scoop the oil into gourds and the gourds are packed and shipped. Shea butter is high in unsaponifiables, antioxidants and cinneamic acid, a natural sunscreen. Shea Butter also contains Vitamins A, E and F. Vitamins A and E sooth the skin as well as provide collagen which has a recognized effect against skin aging. Vitamin F has essential fatty acids that restore damaged skin.

Beeswax. Seals in moisture on the skin and helps to make the sunscreen more water resistant. It imparts a sweet fragrance as well. Our beeswax is sourced locally from a beekeeper named Brian. He has been keeping bees since 1992.

Apricot Kernel Oil. A very mild and non-greasy oil. It is gentle for sensitive baby skin and great for any skin type. Apricot kernel oil is high in vitamins E, A and C. It is also rich in essential fatty acids like oleic and linoleic acid. The source company has a pure-as-can-be ingredient standard. Every essential oil must pass a battery of tests to ensure its authenticity, quality and purity. The extraction method does not include solvent, hexane, or alcohol extraction and the result is an oil that is as pure as it can be!

Neem Oil. Our Neem oil is organic. It is also cold pressed, which means heat is reduced to a minimum throughout the batching of the raw material. Temperatures are controlled to not exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Processing oil in this way helps it to retain the beneficial qualities of the plant. This oil has a garlicy smell that insects do not like. Azadirachtin is the most active component.

Essential Oils. Butterbean uses 100% pure high grade aromatherapy essential oils that have been steam distilled. There is a C of A provided by the company for each of our oils. The oil is "essential" in the sense that it carries a distinctive essence of the plant.

Citronella Oil. A renowned plant based insect repellent with a non-toxic mode of action. Bug-a-boo uses Citronella Ceylon which has a well rounded lemon citrus scent.

Rosemary Oil. Used in our lip balm formulas as a an antioxidant and a preservative to keep our lip balms fresh. There is only a small amount that you cannot taste.

Sweet Citrus blend.  Sweet orange, pink grapefruit, and lime make up our sweet citrus blend. These essential oils are steam distilled and create a cheerful uplifting feeling.

Lanolin.  Is a natural oil derived entirely from the fiber of sheep's wool. It is secreted from the skin of sheep and becomes trapped in the sheep's wool, giving protection from rain and moisture. Lanolin oil is very similar to the oils that our own skin produces. Lanolin is a "heavy duty" moisturizer and emollient.

Vitamin E. An antioxidant that scavenges for free radicals in tissues. It incorporates into the cell membrane and protects the cell from oxidative damage. Vitamin E is a strong moisturizer. Vitamin E works as a natural preservative to extend the shelf life of our products.

Polysorbate 20 and 80. A food grade emulsifier used to keep the oils in our bug spray from separating. The Environmental Working Group gives these Polysorbates a rating of 3 (read more here).

Apple Cider Vinegar. The use of vinegar as a skin tonic dates back to the time of the Romans. It has a tonic action that promotes circulation and  is also antiseptic. Vinegar also helps to regulate the pH of the skin.

Witch Hazel. Has astringent and anti-inflamatory properties. It is used as a carrier for the essential oil and Neem combination in our bug spray.

Least expensive does not always mean best. In our world of push and shove we have lost diversity of taste as we trample a path for the bottom line. Rising out of this consumeristic mentality starts with people like you and I asking for something better. It means knowing the name of the people who make the things we need!
