About Butterbean brand

Founder of Butterbean, a mama-owned business located in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. She started making sunscreen for her 5 children when she learned about the harmful chemicals contained in many of the sunscreens available today.

As parents, we are our children’s advocates. Helping them to be the best they can starts with what goes into and in this case on their bodies. Since the skin is the largest organ, she wanted a product that would be safe for her 10 year old down to her baby. The ingredients she have chosen are grown and processed with respect for people and the planet. The coconut oil is of such high quality that it can be (and is) eaten raw.
The Shea butter is certified organic and fair trade. She used non-nano zinc oxide that has been tested to be a safe particle size. The Neem oil used in the Bug-a-boo is organic and cold pressed, and the essential oils are steam distilled and chemical free!
Butterbean was dedicated to providing chemical-free and effective products in a way that compliment both the people that use them and the environment that they are used in. It was up to them to distill the interdependence on nature into the everyday choices they make.

* Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, *Cera Alba (Beeswax), *Butyrospermum Parkii (Fair Trade Shea) Butter, *Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Tocopherol (Sunflower Vitamin E), Polyhydroxystearic Acid

The Vitamin E is made from sunflowers. It is non-GMO and gluten free.
Read more about Polyhydroxystearic Acid here. Why do we use it? Zinc Oxide particles have a tendency to clump on a microscopic level. This can cause holes in the protection that a sunscreen promises. Polyhydroxystearic Acid is used to stabilize our sunscreen and create smooth even coverage which ultimately protects your skin better than ever! Best of all, it is plant derived and it is non-toxic!

What are the effects of the sun on the skin?

The sun’s rays have both beneficial and harmful effects on the skin and on health. On the side of the benefits, in addition to the proven positive action on morale, the sun also stimulates the synthesis of vitamin D, which is involved in many mechanisms: bone mineralization, immune system, prevention of cardiovascular risks …

However, the dangers of the sun are also very real:

  • ultraviolet (UV) radiation invisible to the eye can be harmful to the epidermis and deeper cell layers. It is enough to walk a few minutes on the beaches in summer to see some pretty specimens of sunburn … It is about a more or less deep skin burn.
  • The sun is also the main cause of aging of the skin, because it damages cellular DNA and causes the alteration of the elastic proteins that support the epidermis: elastin and collagenThus, photoaging leads to a loss of skin tone, which can lead to the appearance of wrinkles.
  • Appearance of pigmentation spots: Prolonged exposure to the sun can bring out or appear pigmentation spots: freckles or dark spots. These brown spots, also called age spots or lentigo, are found on the back, face or hands and are unsightly but perfectly benign.
  • solar hives, localized inflammations called lucites, or pimples and skin rashes
  • skin cancers, such as melanoma, which are strongly favored by UV rays and frequently occur in areas prone to sunburn.
